So I went to my first solo movie for the first time in quite a while this past weekend, when Ellie was in Boise for an agility trial. I fancy myself a Wes Anderson fan and I really enjoy his films, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou being one of my favorite movies of all time. I have heard good things about his new film, Moonrise Kingdom, and I was quite happy when I saw that it was at the local theater right down the street. It has been released in a limited capacity for over a month now and I was fearful I would have to wait for it on DVD, because the theaters around here don’t usually get the smaller films, but it was here and so I set out to watch it, in the theater, by myself. Movie tickets are quite ridiculous these days, and I will talk about this more later in the blog, but 11 dollars later I was settling into my seat towards the front of the theater. The chairs just looked more comfortable up there, not sure why, I usually like sitting in the middle or back. The movie was nothing short of amazing. It was very whimsical and the casting of the movie was superb. The main theme of the movie is young love, and it follows the misadventures of a couple of young outcast children, from different backgrounds, as they attempt to escape their situations on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of ’65. If you are a Wes Anderson fan I would highly recommend the film, and even if your not and you would like a good date movie or just a good movie in general, I would go and checkout Moonrise Kingdom, it was very worth the 11 dollar ticket price.
Next, with my wife back from Boise, we decided to go see Brave, the new Disney/Pixar film. Ellie and I hit up some Bruchi’s cheesesteak before the show and had some pretty good sandwiches, Ellie claims she has never had a cheesesteak before so I guess she can check that one off the old bucket list. My bucket list item was to have a Philly cheesesteak in Philadelphia and I accomplished that a few years ago while traveling for an exercise for the Air Force, but I digress. We headed to the theater after some grub and much to my pleasant surprise it was only 11 dollars for tickets for BOTH of us. I guess they have a super matinee at the theater by Costco from 4-530 during the weekdays and its only $5.50 a ticket, so I will be hitting that up as much as possible from now on! One thing I found funny as we were walking in is that they referred to it as Brave 2D on the ticket and even on the sign for the theater, like we weren’t as cool because we didn’t go and see it in 3D. Ellie and I are both not into the 3D thing, it just seems to give us a headache, I may have to try it out again soon it has been a while since I saw a movie in 3D, but I think its pretty hilarious they try to make you feel like lesser of a movie-goer because your going to see the regular 2D version. I really enjoyed this movie as well, it had quite a few funny moments in it, I liked the story and the animation was so amazing that at times it looked real to me. The basic plot is that there is a princess who is to be betrothed to one of the princes from the 3 other kingdoms, in Scotland I think, and she chooses to try and change her destiny instead. I would recommend this one to anyone who has enjoyed Pixar movies in the past and wants to just relax and have a good time at the movies.
Both of the films I have watched recently were shorter, under 2 hours that is, I enjoy shorter movies, unless it is for something like The Avengers which definitely was excellent and not at all boring at almost 2 and a half hours. I would highly recommend both movies to any of you out there reading this, they were very different but both highly enjoyable film going experiences. I hope to see The Avengers again here soon and then there is like 3 more movies currently in theaters I want to see and a bunch more coming out very soon. So stay tuned for more movie reviews on my blog.
Speaking of The Avengers, I saw it again last weekend! It was just as awesome and thrilling the second time but some of the wow factor was gone simply because I knew what was going to happen. Ellie and I also watched a DVD we picked up a while ago, The Woman in Black. This movie stars Daniel Radcliffe as a lawyer who must go clean up some paperwork for this extremely creepy house. I won’t go into much detail, it is your standard haunted house/creepy movie but if you are a D Rad fan and looking for a decently scary/creepy movie then I would recommend checking it out. I am not much into horror/scary movies but I found it entertaining and even jumped a couple of times, I also liked the ending quite a bit. This movie clocked in at a cool hour and 34 minutes, short and sweet. That’s all for now, happy post 4th of July!
